Northumbrian Water is investing more than £1 million in reducing the flood risk in a County Durham town and is also exploring other future opportunities to reduce the flood risk in other parts of the town.

The work involves the installation of a new section of sewer pipe along with a new storage tank. The sewer upgrades will increase the capacity of the network, decreasing the likelihood of floods.

Northumbrian Water’s delivery partner, ESH-MWH will start work on the scheme at the beginning of February.

Graham Watson, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said:

“Reducing the risk of flooding in communities is one of our biggest priorities at Northumbrian Water, because we know the devastation it can cause to people’s lives.”

He added that the project will help to increase the capacity of the sewer network, making it less likely that people in the area will be affected by flooding in the future. It is expected that the project will be completed by the end of July.
